Great System, Too Expensive! September 4, 2010 Brian W (Gresham, Oregon) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This a a great system, but you can get similiar sound quality with a LG LFD790 Home theater system, and these go for as little as $150 used. LG LFD790 - Home theater system - glossy black
Onkyo HT-S5300 7.1 Channel Home Theater August 16, 2010 Cecilio Peña Delivery on time, the quality of sound is great, very easy to install, Im a happy costumer.
Good price, but not a keeper. August 15, 2010 Y. Ning (NJ USA) Ordered this first and finally returned and bought a S6300.
1. This was released earlier than S6300 or S7300. There is already a firmware update needed for receiver. However you have to ship to Onkyo service center and wait for 10 days, and can't update by yourself. Even Onkyo pays for shipping, it doesn't feel good for a new item.
2. The subwoofer comes crippled, called Onkyo to get replacement for one foot, they are willing to help but they don't have the part. Sent me a wrong one.
3. Compared to S6300, it is cheaper and basically is the same. But there are couple of extra features of S6300 I like to have. Check my review for S6300.
Cool HTS August 11, 2010 Rajkumar Kottapalli (NJ) A very good Home Theater System which has lot of good features. Initital set up takes some time around 1 Hr. It is not that much diffifult to connect. The shipping takes lot of time. I have received this in about 10 days. The Woofer is very huge. The bass effect from woofer is excellent. Knowing about the remote control and on screen control will take little time for beginners. After you know about the remote the operation is very simple. The sound is excellent. I feel that I was watching in a theater.75% sound feels like a theater. If i keep more than 75% there will be lot of complaints on me in the apartment. 75% is very big sound. The very first day we watched Monster Vs Aliens in 3d and it was amazing. Sound quality is amazing. The negative about this HTS is that the front and centre speakers are little bit big and woofer is too big. Woofer occupies lot of space. If space is not a constraint, then 5 * is a good rating for this HTS.
My dog thinks the sounds are real July 31, 2010 electronics guy (USA) First - people should note the size of the speakers and the sub woofer. The pieces are fairly hefty and will be prominent in a small room. I was surprised when this system was delivered and as I unboxed it.
Sound quality is wonderful, though. I mounted the rear speakers on Definitive Technology ProStand 600/800 Speaker Stands (Pair, Black) and set them on either end of my couch. I mounted the other four speakers on the wall and routed the wires inside the wall to make for a clean install. (For anyone pulling wire under carpet like I had to for the rear speakers, save yourself any frustration and get a wire snake at the hardware store. The flat wire makes it easy to extend the tool under your carpet and put the head where you want it to give it the wire and pull it back through.)
I set it up in a Dolby PLzII Height configuration with two high front speakers and two rear surround speakers in addition to the standard right/left/center/sub ones.
It sounds great! I've watched a few movies so far and one was one of the Harry Potter movies with lost of wild animal sounds in a couple of places. My dog sat up and staarted trying to find what was making the noise. Surround sound is amazing and really adds to the experience. It's better sound than you get in the theater.
On the Onkyo receiver, it would be nice if it did the pass-through when off, but with multiple HDMI inputs, which to pass through? Maybe the last one selected but this is minor. Whenever I watch anything on my TV, I like having the surround sound anyway. The settings are easy to do/configure and the menu superimposed on the video output is a very nice touch and makes setup even easier.
The receiver/amplifier does get a little warm so make sure you have provision for good natural air circulation. I would not recommend putting it into a cubbyhole that is any kind of tight fit, or stack any equipment on top of it, though. It does need air able to flow through and around to cool it - or devise some way with a small fan.
In sum, the speakers were a little larger than I was expecting but that is my fault for not paying attention to the dimensions. The receiver does get warm but it is not extreme and not an issue if you can adjust shelves for proper cooling and don't stack anything on top of it.
The sound is great and the controls are easy to use. I am very happy with this system and it really adds to the immersion when watching a movie.
